Princess Costumes for Girls

September 10, 2012 | By More

What little girl hasn’t loved the idea of being a princess, even if it’s only for pretend or for a night like Halloween? With all of the many varieties of princess costumes for girls on the market, you can find a style that any girl would be delighted to wear. There are princess costumes made to replicate the kind of princesses who lived in castles in medieval times to princesses who live in a modern day setting.

Fancy lacy costumes that have been released as licensed costumes are abundant today. Wearing one of these beautiful gowns is always a huge hit with little girls because these are replicas right down the very last button or sparkly adornment. You’ll find costumes that are gowns made from shimmering material that are straight gowns and you’ll find some gowns that are made in a southern belle style with hoops and poofy petticoats. They didn’t have this stuff for Halloween when I was a little girl, and for school, my mother always dressed me in my sister’s hand-me-down dresses or “mod” dresses. Everyone else had the fluffy skirts with layers of petticoats. When it came time for Halloween, we had those old boxed costumes. A rayon suit with a mask that we were never allowed to wear. No mask equals “what is she supposed to be?” How embarrassing. These costumes were cheaply made and needed a lot of make-believe to complete the overall picture. One year, my mother bought me a bride’s costume, most likely reluctantly. I probably begged for it. It was a straight-ish white dress (at a time when wedding gowns all had a full flouncy skirt), fashioned from a cheap rayon fabric, and it came with short white veil attached to a pearly crown with a comb attachment. To me, that little crown was exquisite.

I wore that thing around the house for days before Halloween, which turned out to be too cold to go without a coat, so no one outside the house ever saw it. I’ll never forget that Halloween. Wearing that dress and playing bride was just so much fun. I can’t even imagine the joy of being a little girl and getting one of the beautiful princess costumes for trick or treat and Halloween parties. If you read the customer comments for the princess costumes, people talk about their little girls or their granddaughters who love to put these gowns on and prance around the house and play princess in them. I can barely imagine. What lucky little girls! Plus now the heroines are so awesomely inspiring and empowering!

Today, some of the princess costumes for girls are very unique because they’re patterned after a certain famous princess. The top favorites among the favorite Disney princesses are Cinderella, Belle, Aurora and Ariel. Other Disney movies with strong heroines always strike a chord among little girls and they want to dress like these heroines. You’ll see those characters reflected in costumes like Princess Jasmine from the Aladdin movie. Princess Odette from The Swan Princess has also been a big favorite. The princess from the movie Tangled is very popular now with little girls, but make sure you include her long locks! Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!

Gowns that dazzle in soft pinks or catch the light in pale blue or add a spot of sunshine in lemon yellow are some of the top colors this Halloween, but you’ll also find multi-colored ethnic princess costumes for little girls as well. Plus, many of these costumes come with the addition of a tiara and a wand, so you’ll have the accessories on hand for the big Halloween night.

Not all of the costumes rely on color alone in order to stand out. Some of the princess dresses are real show stoppers because they include fiber optic lights that any little girl would love to own. There are plenty of fairy princess costumes to choose from and ethnic costumes as well including Spanish, Asian and Indian princess costumes. Nowadays, no little girl has to feel left out of princess-hood.

While many of the princess costumes are light and delicate bringing to mind enchanting fairy tales, not all of the costumes are so cheery. Some of them are a little more on the spooky side and show off the chills and thrills offered by the spookiest night of all. You’ll find gothic princess dresses complete with creepy spider sidekicks.

Thanks to the popular vampire movies, there’s also plenty of interest in vampire princess costumes and girls love the idea of dressing up as a vampire. Whether for the day or the night, girls will enjoy dressing up as a princess for Halloween.
