Spring Gifts

Kitchen Knives

June 11, 2012 | By More

When I got married, my cousin gave me a set of kitchen knives as a gift. He joked that we should be sure to use them for cooking, and not on each other. We had a good laugh over that, but we soon found that these knives were very nice, and perhaps they could be used for almost any cutting purpose in the house. You can always find knives at great prices, but when you really want something that works well, and something to last, you should shell out some extra money to get the very best.

You may find standard sets of kitchen knives in any store, and these work for the most part. In these sets, you will find knives in different sizes, a set of scissors, and then four steak knives. These are usually in a block that you can just set on your kitchen counter. These can be good, but it does depend on what you pay for them and what you want to use them for. If you are very serious about your cooking, and you need to know your knives are going to last, these might not be your best option.

You may have to go with an assortment of kitchen knives that you choose on your own. They may not come in a set, unless you buy them at a restaurant supply outlet, but there are some extensive and expensive sets of culinary knives out there on the market. You may have to shop high-end cooking or home stores to find them, or you may have to find them online. Otherwise, it might be a matter of choosing the kitchen knives that you must have, and then finding a way to keep them together in one handy place.

No matter what type of knives for the kitchen you buy, one thing will remain constant. They will need to be sharpened so that they work their best. There are some that promise to remain sharp no matter what you do to them, but you may find that these are not the best kitchen knives that you can find. Instead, you should find a good sharpener, and learn how to use it correctly. Over time, you may find that you sharpen so much that your knife wears away to nothing. This takes years to happen though, so do not be afraid to keep them as sharp as you need so your cooking sessions go as smoothly as you need. Fighting with dull knives in the kitchen can take the joy out of any meal you prepare and ups your chances of cutting yourself while cooking.
