Toddler Animal and Bug Costumes
When it comes to toddler bug and animal costumes, there are generally those that are popular for boys, and those that moms just have to have for their girls. Technically, they’re all unisex Halloween costumes, but let’s go over which ones boys and girls prefer for their special trick or treat evening.
Toddler girls love little bug costumes that are cute, not scary. Dragonfly costumes are a good example of this. They come with wings, a dress and headbands, and the fiber optics let them light up the night! Lady Bug costumes for toddler girls are adorable. There are a wide variety of styles. Many of them are ballerina costumes with black tights, and a bodysuit or dress with wings. A little headband for the antennae completes the cute effect.
Bumblebee costumes for toddler girls are just as sweet as the lady bugs. They have black and yellow leotards, a festive tutu, wings and a headband with the antennae attached. She can even hold a special honey-making wand to make her costume more magical. Little girls just love prancing around in their cute little costumes. Halloween is such a fun time for make believe.
Bumblebee costumes are not only for girls though. My little boys had bumblebee costumes that were adorable, and anything but feminine. They had black knit pants and turtlenecks, and the “bee belly” fit over them. It was black and yellow stripes on the outside and stuffed with cotton batting to get that bee shape, and the inside was just black polyester material. They had black “bonnets” that tied at the chin, and on top had springy antennae that moved freely (think killer bees from Saturday Night Live, but without the chest bullets). The antennae were actually springs with fuzz balls on the ends. The costumes were just adorable and the kids just loved the moving antennae. Who wouldn’t?
A butterfly costume is something little toddler girls always seem to love. They can choose from a variety of wing colors, some wings are simple and some are very fancy. There are also Monarch butterfly costumes in Halloween colors that are just perfect. Spider costumes might typically be for boys, but some of them are so beautiful that they’re only fitting for a little girl. Boys can find the less frilly spider costumes that allow them to giggle as they scare everyone who comes in contact with them.
Puppies are another costume many boys like to choose. There are many dog costumes: Dalmatians, Saint Bernards, or even the infamous Scooby Doo himself. Clifford the Big Red Dog is another costumes toddler boys enjoy dressing up in, but I’ve known some little girls that liked to dress up a Clifford, too. After all, they know the stories, too.
If your son is a fan of Harry Potter, since many little ones have caught onto the craze, then he might want to dress up as Harry’s white owl, Hedwig. Another movie costume is a hit among toddler boys, the penguin costume. It’s pretty popular, now that the movie Happy Feet has emerged on DVD.
Some little boys have a blast dressing up in a toddler monkey costume. They can jump around and act silly, and their costume has a tail they can play with, too. However, that one might not be a good choice for a little guy who’s a bit hyperactive. Some of the costumes have hoods and masks and some don’t, so you’ll be able to choose what your little guy can withstand. Add a banana for an accessory and you’re ready to trick or treat. Be careful of masks and anything that can interfere with vision or walking up steps. Mom or Dad will likely carry them a bit, but there will be some instances where your little one will climb up him- or herself. Don’t make it difficult or hazardous for them.
A spooky bat is tons of fun for toddler boys. Everyone will pretend they’re scared to death when a little bat walks up on Halloween night. They come with a neat cape (which boys love) and a hood that has perky ears on top.
Lions and dinosaurs are two more costumes in the animal family that boys get excited about for Halloween. Both are fierce creatures and can let your little one roar so loud it frightens off everyone in the vicinity. What fun he’ll have!
