Group Decade Costumes
Group decade costumes are a fun idea to use for your Halloween party attire because it’s something where a theme is in place, but each person has the freedom to put their own spin on it. They might be a specific character from a movie or TV show, or just dress up for the time instead.
The 1920s Halloween costumes are fantastic, elegant and fun for women and dashing and dangerous for the men. The women generally wear flapper dresses, with cute headpieces. Men get to create their own gangster look of the 20s, when they wore suits and hats and exuded power on the streets.
The 1950s costumes are lots of fun, too. You can dress up as the characters from a movie like Grease, the Pink Ladies and T-birds. Or, you can just invest in simple 50s attire with poodle skirts and kerchiefs for the girls and leather jackets and jeans for the guys.
When it comes to the 1960s, you can start to get a little crazy with your costumes. This is when the groovy hippie chick attire came on the scene, so there are short skirts and go go boots that are popular for this decade. The men dressed as hippies, too, so long hair or afro wigs work nicely with the flared pants legs and frilly shirts.
As you move into the 1970s, you still get to dress up in flared jeans. Those didn’t go away. But the attire switches from hippie to disco, when John Travolta became a household name for his Disco Nights white jumpsuit.
A 1980s group costume get-up would have to include big hair, for everyone (men and women). The clothes were flashy, and included tons of color. Flashdance is one movie that represents the 80s attire well for women when it comes to off the shoulder cuts and leg warmers, but so is Valley Girls, where it showcases all of the jewelry and brightness that the 80s were all about.
In the 1990s, things began to tone down a bit. Music switched from party rock to grunge metal, so your costume would need to reflect a Kurt Cobain look instead of upbeat 80s attire. You can find wigs and grunge clothes online for this group costume mindset.
Don’t forget about futuristic decades, if you want to move forward instead of back in the costume time machine. There are lots of fun Steampunk clothes for groups that reflect a fun and futuristic look.
